Question 1

What Is Smart Factory IT in Industrial Production?

Accepted Answer

Factory IT connects production systems - sensors, controls, supervisory control systems, and MES - with enterprise systems such as ERP. The goal is to ensure a seamless, secure flow of information from the field level to the enterprise level, creating transparency, traceability, and controllability across the entire value chain. Unlike traditional office IT, Factory IT is designed with the production process in mind and takes into account real-time requirements, equipment availability, and OT security.

Question 2

What is an MES, and when is it worth implementing one?

Accepted Answer

A Manufacturing Execution System (MES) controls and documents production in real time - acting as a bridge between the control level and the ERP system. It is worthwhile whenever real-time production information is needed, traceability is required, or key performance indicators such as OEE must be reliable. The implementation process typically begins with an assessment of process and data maturity, followed by architecture design and system selection.

Question 3

How can OT and IT be integrated into an existing facility?

Accepted Answer

OT and IT are connected via standardized interfaces and protocols such as OPC UA or MQTT, making data from the field level, control systems, and SCADA available throughout the entire system, all the way to the MES and ERP. Existing control systems as well as SCADA, MES, and ERP systems are integrated rather than replaced - an integrative approach that preserves established plant landscapes and expands them incrementally.
